Compress, Convert, and Resize Images Without Signing Up

Images are responsible for roughly half the weight of the average web page. Not JavaScript, not CSS — images. And yet the tools most people reach for when they need to compress a photo, convert a PNG to WebP, or resize something for a specific platform all want an account before you can touch a slider.

That’s a bad trade for a five-second task.

There’s a whole category of image tools that work entirely in your browser, process files client-side without uploading them to a server, and require nothing more than opening a tab. Some are built by Google. Some are single-developer projects with millions of monthly users. All of them are free and work without signup.

Why Format Choice Matters More Than You Think

Most people compress images without thinking about format. They have a JPEG, they make it smaller, done. But format selection often matters more than the compression setting itself.

WebP — a format developed by Google — produces files roughly 25–34% smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. AVIF, the newer format backed by Netflix and the Alliance for Open Media, can reduce file sizes by up to 50% compared to JPEG. Both formats are now supported by all major browsers. If you’re optimizing images for a website, switching from JPEG to WebP alone can cut your payload by a third before you even adjust a quality slider.

TinyPNG: Fast and Completely Hands-Off

TinyPNG solves the batch problem. Drop up to 20 images at once (up to 5MB each, no account required) and it compresses them using lossy optimization that selectively reduces the color palette in ways most people can’t see. PNG files typically shrink 60–80%. JPEG and WebP are supported too.

The experience is a drag-and-drop box, a progress bar, and a download link. Nothing to configure. That’s a design choice — the algorithm makes the decisions for you, and it’s good enough that you probably won’t second-guess it.

Unlike tools that require signup for batch processing, TinyPNG’s 20-file limit applies per batch, not per day. Drag another 20 images when the first batch finishes. ezGIF: More Than Its Name Suggests

The name undersells it. ezGIF is one of the most feature-rich image tools available without any account, and it handles far more than animated GIFs.

For GIF work: create from a video file or image sequence, optimize frame timing, reduce colors, crop, resize, reverse, add text. The GIF optimizer is especially useful — animated GIFs are infamously large, and ezGIF’s optimization typically cuts them 30–40% without visible quality loss.

But the tool list extends beyond GIFs. The “files leave browser” column matters for privacy. Squoosh and SVGOMG never send your file anywhere — everything happens in WebAssembly or JavaScript in your tab. TinyPNG, ezGIF, and Convertio upload to their servers, process, and return results. All three have stated short retention periods (typically 24 hours or less), but you’re trusting their policy.

For most everyday tasks — compressing a product photo, resizing a header image, converting a JPEG to WebP — server-side processing is a fine tradeoff for the convenience and format support those tools provide. The tools that survive without locking you in tend to be the ones that are actually good.
